Gas prices are incredibly low, the lowest they’ve been since 2009. Doesn’t it seem like the perfect time to go on a road trip? You could head out on a National Geographic tour of “Forgotten Florida”—seeing everything ranging from a “fountain of youth” in Wakulla Springs (possibly visited by Ponce de Leon), to the home of author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings near Citra (she wrote The Yearling), or a chance to see live mermaids at Wachee Springs State Park (don’t you believe in mermaids?).

It really doesn’t take much excuse to get in the car and go, does it? Before you head out, just make sure you’re ready to go. Some good ideas include:

  • Make a plan. Want to visit a museum or restaurant? Is it Monday? Take a quick look at hours of operation, location, and other key details for your destinations.
  • Check the news for special events that could tie up traffic or clog up an otherwise quiet spot.
  • Clean out your car. Toss out any clutter and trash, while you make sure the essentials including jumper cables, spare tire and a flashlight are still in place and in good shape.
  • Make sure your vehicle is ready to go, including your glass. See any chips or cracks?
