As I write this post, Tropical Storm Debby is blowing through Florida. So, while it may be too late to defend your home against this particular assault from Mother Nature, there’s still a lot of hurricane season left, and there’s a lot you can do to protect your investment.

The following tips have been compiled by the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS), a national nonprofit initiative of the insurance industry to reduce deaths, injuries, property damage, economic losses and human suffering caused by natural disasters.

Windows – In this part of the country, hurricane-resistant windows are a logical choice. Not only do they stand a much better chance of surviving a major windstorm, they’re more likely to protect your home’s interior from water damage, and prevent you and your family members from being injured by flying glass.

Entry doors – The IBHS recommends securing doors with at least three hinges and a dead bolt security lock. The bolt should be at least one inch long.

Patio doors – Because of their size and how they’re installed, sliding glass doors are more susceptible to wind damage than many other types of doors. That’s why you should consider upgrading to impact-resistant door systems. They’re made of laminated glass, plastic glazing or a combination of plastic and glass.
