Does this sound familiar? This actually happened to Steve, a friend of ours.
Steve needed a windshield replacement, so he called his insurance agent. The agent told Steve that he would need to call the insurance company’s auto glass department. When Steve called, the representative answered the phone by identifying himself as being with a national glass company.
During the course of the conversation, the glass company rep tried several times to get Steve to purchase glass replacement services from his company. That’s called “steering” and it’s illegal. Fortunately, Steve knew about the practice of steering and insisted that he be able to choose his own glass provider.
You have the same right. Your insurance company cannot dictate which glass company you must use. If they do, you can report the incident by calling (888)844-1989 or by submitting this online report.
